I love this campground because it is first come first serve and you have direct access to the dunes 24/7. It's only $20 a night and the self serve system is efficient.
I have camped here many times and love it. The walk to the dune field is easy. Thjjs is a busy place in the summer.
Inside Great Sand dunes national park is a nice cosy tree camground. Best for car camping or smaller rigs under 25 feet. Bathrooms, no electricity, but water on a pump. 1/2 mile hike to dunes.
Came in and stayed September 10th through 12th, at campsite 56 in Loop 2. First time here, so cannot say much about the other loops and campsites. But from what I experienced and saw, some sites are better than others as far as tree coverage and more privacy from adjacent sites. Spots 55, 55, 56 in Loop 2 seemed to be the best for that. But the whole camping area is still very beautiful and can see, and walk to, the dunes from there.
Beautiful developed campground near the dune field. All the usual amenities, plus amphitheater, seasonal store. Varying levels of site privacy--in general, the further from the sand the more tress and more cover between sites. Access to a number of trails, including paths to the dunes and the Visitor center. The Sand Creek Trail leads into the backcountry, and eventually into the mountains. Campground is wicked seasonal, and when open in the spring and summer can quickly fill. Plan accordingly.
Lots of hiking and exploring trails, short and quick access to the dunes parking lot (if you rather drive a bit closer, since it is an undertaking), and just a little ways from the Pinon Campgrounds, are the Zapata Falls. Would highly recommend going there if you're going to camp for a few days. Very very beautiful, and well worth the short drive (including up a rough and rocky road) and a lovely 1/4 mile hike.
They sell firewood bundles at the little shop, and do not let you bring or gather firewood, as to prevent pests and bugs that are not native to the area.
Could say more, and even much more about the Sand Dunes themselves, but this is for the campgrounds. Just if you do the dunes, it's absolutely worth getting to the top of the highest dunes for the breathtaking view, but start that journey early in the morning (it gets very hot and the sand becomes scorching midday), and have yourself some sand goggles of aome sort (also available at the outpost).
It was absolutely incredible!
Some sites are strictly through reservation, while others are first come first serve. There are sites for smaller groups, as well as ones for bigger groups, RVs, campers, trucks, etc.
If you have, or have not been, one of the most spectacular places I've visited/camped at.
Very accommodating grounds, with water for drinking and washing dishes, fire pits with grates, trash and recycling area, air and water for cars and RVs, and restrooms with running water. Also is a little shop, or outpost, that literally has most everything you may need.
