I always come through National Park visitors' centers, there's so much great information and the kids always like to get the Jr. Ranger kits and patches.
I was especially impressed that the ranger opened up after closing time to let my daughter back in to retrieve her cell phone that she'd left there. Sure beat having to have it shipped back and really appreciate the ranger for doing that kind act.
It's nice, but worth about 30 minutes, and has a gift shop. You go out the front glass doors and basically, "yep there it is, the sand dunes."
